Artist Bio
A native of Brussels Belgium and long term resident of Southern California. Mishel’s painting career began around 2002 after she moved to the San Francisco Bay area of Northern California. Primarily a self-taught artist, she began painting nature scenes in watercolor. She had no idea how quickly things would change after her first painting honored an award at a juried show, following Invitational Shows and soon, achieved gallery representation in the US Virgin Islands – Where a gallery owner advised her to paint in other mediums.
Today, Mishel still finds her inspiration from nature yet, now she paints in acrylic and oil on canvas. And, uses both palette knives along with brushes in order to accomplish a steady transition of color and values in temperatures, along with the use of hard lines and soft edges throughout the painting in order to create the desired effect. Her floral and landscape scenes portray tranquility and her style is captivating as it soothes the viewer. She has developed the ability to draw an audience deeply into her creative vision. She’s also known for her impressive color schemes and graceful compositions which effectively merge nature into her canvas. Mishel’s work can be found in many private and corporate collections here and abroad.
Artist Statement
As a painter, my body of work has developed from experimentation and inspirations within the moment. And, in some cases, my work was created from others inspiring me to produce works in a different style or, in a particular medium to which compels myself to the next level of creativity. Also, I like to experiment and change my work as ideas come to mind which allows myself to merge the familiar to the unfamiliar and letting me experience my own unknown creativity in order to excel.
When commencing a new subject, I use images from; real life, memory, and photographs, these are the basis of my compositions and color schemes. Also, I engage myself in the essence of the overall scene and composition – how a feeling allures me and sways my frame of mind. And, while captivated by these senses I then portray that feeling onto the canvas. This is what drives my artistic impulse and my goal while creating a painting – enticing the feeling within. I often hear from those who have viewed or, have obtained my work that what pleases them most is how my work has touched their emotions. They tell me how they feel whenever they look at the painting – I think this is what touches me most of all. My goal is to experiment with different media in ways that reveal the moments of an experience most creatively.
